Articles I - V

Article I. Name

The name of the association shall be the Student Government Association (SGA) of Smith College.

Article II. Purpose

The purpose of this association shall be to encourage active cooperation in the work of self-governance, to enact and enforce laws according to the Grant of Powers, and to ensure the representation of the views and perspectives of the student body in the governance of the college.

Article III. Membership

All undergraduate students of Smith College are members of the SGA.

Article IV. Cabinet
Section 1. Purpose

The purpose of the SGA Cabinet shall be to act as a direct link between students and the administration in order to keep students informed as to college initiatives and administrative changes, ensure that the administration and faculty are aware of student opinions, concerns and suggestions, and advocate for greater student representation and input in governing decisions affecting the student body. The Cabinet will work in conjunction with the student Senate in order to accomplish initiatives and increase the accessibility of information for all members of the association. The Cabinet will also support events, groups, and individuals that benefit the Smith College community. Cabinet shall work to ensure the financial stability of the SGA, support all SGA committees, and be a pro-active force on campus, aware of and responsive to student concerns.

Section 2. Members

The Cabinet of the SGA shall consist of ten members:

  1. The President of the SGA, who shall serve as chair;
  2. The Vice President of the SGA;
  3. The Secretary of the SGA;
  4. The Vice President of finance);
  5. The Chair of the House Presidents' Association;
  6. The Chairs of Class Presidents’ Association;
  7. The Chair of the Committee on Appointments (vice chair of the Committee on Elections);
  8. The Chair of Curriculum Committee;
  9. A representative of the Student Power Coalition.
Section 3. Impeachment
  1. The SGA Cabinet can impeach any of its members by a two-thirds majority vote of the Cabinet’s membership following an investigation and public hearing conducted by the Committee on Elections. Any member of the constituency may initiate proceedings by gaining the support of 25 percent of that constituency, in the form of a signed petition. Possible grounds for impeachment are suspension, dismissal, permanent separation, negligence, dereliction of duty, and other infractions deemed sufficient by any member of the SGA Cabinet.
Article V. Student Senate
Section 1. Purpose

The purpose of the Senate shall be to enact legislation within the framework of the Grant of Powers. The Senate shall provide a forum for all members of the student body to voice opinions and concerns. The Senate will keep all students informed about the activities of the SGA, as well as to charter, support, and review all organizations of the SGA. The Senate shall, in conjunction with the SGA Cabinet, accomplish initiatives and increase accessibility to information for all members of the Student Government Association by being a pro-active force on campus, soliciting and addressing student concerns.

Section 2. Members
  1. The Vice President of the SGA, who shall serve as chair;
  2. The President of the SGA, who shall serve as a non-voting member;
  3. The Secretary of the SGA;
  4. Class and Ada Vice Presidents as voting members;
  5. The Chair of Chartering Committee (Vice-Chair of Finance Committee) as a non-voting member;
  6. The Chair of the Committee on Elections;
  7. The Vice-Chair of the Committee on Appointments
  8. The Chair of the Sustainability Committee;
  9. The Vice-Chair of the Curriculum Committee;
  10. A representative of the Student Power Coalition;
  11. A representative of the House Presidents' Association;
  12. The senators which will include:
    1. All-Campus Senators;
    2. Ada Senators or designees from Ada Cabinet;
  13. The remaining undergraduate student body as non-voting members.
