Recycling

Smith recycles! Smith’s Facilities Management department provides a comprehensive campus-wide system of receptacles and educational signage to support this community commitment. Pay attention to the signs attached to or posted near every campus bin in order to make the right choice about what to compost and what to recycle. All students are expected to think before they throw, to reduce our impact on the frontline communities who live in proximity to our waste’s final destination.

Recycling containers for bottles and cans; paper and cardboard are located on the main floor or basement of each house and throughout the academic buildings. In addition, each student room has been provided with a blue recycling bin. Students are responsible for emptying this bin into the larger barrels at the recycling site for their house.

Massachusetts is the first state to ban all textiles from the waste stream! If you are no longer interested in a piece of clothing, donate it to your house Free Bin, maintained by student EcoReps. If the textile has lived its effective life and is ready for disposal, there is a textile waste receptacle in your house laundry room.

CFL bulbs, small electronics, ink cartridges, rechargeable, button, or lithium ion batteries can be recycled at the electronics recycling center, located on the lower level of the Campus Center.

Detailed information about what to recycle is posted at the central recycling site in your house. For more information, go to the Smith recycling site at https://www.smith.edu/about-smith/sustainable-smith/campus-sustainability.
