Payroll Requirements

Your federal and state withholding elections impact taxes withheld from your paycheck each pay period.

To complete or update your elections, view the following articles.

Form W-4

IRS Form W-4 is completed by employees to indicate federal tax withholding. View instructions for completing the W-4 in Workday.

Form M-4

Massachusetts Department of Revenue Form M-4 is completed by employees to indicate state tax withholding. View instructions for completing the M-4 in Workday.

Additionally, the IRS and individual states have their own websites explaining withholding elections, including the rate tables used for withholdings. Please consult your tax adviser with any questions you may have about completing your withholding elections and how they affect your personal financial situation.

Form W-2

Smith College is required by the IRS to provide every employee with a Form W-2 for each calendar year to be used in completing the employee’s annual tax return. The Form W-2 details the employee’s compensation and tax withholding amounts for the year.

Current employees automatically receive both electronic and a printed W-2. To opt out of a printed copy, you must log in to Workday via the Smith Portal. Choose the My Tax Documents quick link.

Direct Deposit Authorization

Direct deposit of payroll funds is required for all employees. On payday, your pay is deposited to the financial institution(s) you designate. Update your Payment Elections in Workday.
