Held each fall, Family Weekend gives participating families a taste of life at Smith. This fall, Family Weekend will be held on October 29–31, 2021. At this time we are planning for an in-person event in accordance with state and college guidelines. For questions, please email

Smith College is excited to invite parents and families to campus for Family Weekend, October 29 to 31. Come join us!


COVID Guidelines

  • Please note that service from the Campus Center Café and The Compass Library Café during Family Weekend will only be available for those members of the Smith community in the testing protocol.
  • While meals will not be served on campus for guests during Family Weekend, we are pleased to provide a list of local restaurants.
  • To ensure the safety of our community, and in following our existing COVID protocols, houses will not be open to families or other visitors outside of Smith’s testing program. We look forward to welcoming families to outdoor events and appreciate the incredible work our students have done to ensure that our campus remains safe and healthy under Smith’s Culture of Care.
  • Family Weekend events will be held outside and under tents so that parents and families can attend. Please note that although most events are outside, there will be masking requirements at some.

Family Weekend At-a-Glance

This overview is provided to give parents and families a glimpse of plans for Family Weekend. Family Weekend events start at 1 p.m. EST on Friday and end at noon on Sunday. 

Friday, October 29
Afternoon Welcome! Visit the Family Weekend hospitality suite to register and pick up your schedule of events, then spend the afternoon exploring campus. Join Dean of the College Baishakhi Taylor for one of Smith’s longstanding traditions, Afternoon Tea.
Saturday, October 30
Morning Just arriving? The hospitality suite is open for registration and picking up your schedule of events. Don’t miss the President’s Welcome and Reception. There’s an apple cider pressing, Zumba on the lawn and the traditional Family Weekend Mill River walk.
Afternoon Head downtown! Northampton is known for its delicious food. After you grab lunch, head back to campus to check out our field hockey team and/or find your way to our Fall Fest. There will be plenty of cider donuts, pumpkin decorating and a live band for your enjoyment.
Evening Spend some quality time with your student getting to know the area. We will provide a list of local favorites. After dinner, come back to campus to craft with our Smith To Do program, where you’ll have a chance to make your own luminaries. To end the evening, grab s’mores and gather by the fire and get to know other families.
Sunday, October 31
Morning Our Smith frisbee team will be holding an all-day tournament that you’re invited to. Are you a bird watcher, want to explore our botanic garden, or take a canoe ride on the Mill River? Today’s the day! Events end around noon, but feel free to relax and enjoy the day.
