Floyd Cheung, vice president for equity and inclusion, guides the development and administration of all equity- and inclusion-related initiatives and programs at Smith. Among his responsibilities are programming, curricular initiatives, and supporting the recruitment and retention of a diverse faculty, staff and student body. A professor of English language and literature and American studies, Cheung was the founding chair of the Five College Asian/Pacific/American Studies Certificate Program. He most recently served as faculty director of the Sherrerd Center for Teaching and Learning.
Amy Hunter, director of equal opportunity and compliance/Title IX coordinator, is responsible for coordinating Smith’s compliance under federal and state civil rights laws and regulations related to education, employment and public accommodations. She manages the college’s response to reports and complaints of discrimination, including mediations, investigations, findings and recommendations, and provides campus-wide training and outreach aimed at compliance and prevention for employees and students. Prior to coming to Smith, Hunter was interim director of human resources at Hampshire College, was an attorney in private practice focused on school law, and was a senior attorney at the Office for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Education for the bulk of her legal career.
Raven Fowlkes-Witten is the program and outreach coordinator for the Office for Equity and Inclusion. In addition, Raven serves as the point person and advocate for undocumented, trans and gender non-conforming students. As a liaison, they will organize and provide resources for these groups as well as advise and support students as needed. Raven also oversees the social media for the office and is excited by campus programs centered around equity and inclusion. Their open hours are Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m.–noon and Wednesdays from 2–3:30 p.m. and they are always available by email.
Toby Davis '03 is the inclusion education trainer/facilitator for the Office for Equity and Inclusion. In this role, he is available to provide a variety of trainings to individual departments, groups, and the campus as a whole. In addition, Toby serves as the point person and advocate for low income, first generation, trans and gender-nonconforming students. His areas of interest include antiracism, queer and trans liberation, intergroup dialogue, and compassionate communication. He holds a B.A. from Smith College and an M.Ed in Social Justice Education from UMass, as well as a certificate in Social Justice Mediation. His office hours are Wednesdays from 2-3:30p.m. and Thursdays from 10-11:30a.m. or by appointment.
Reverend Matilda Rose Cantwell is the director of the Center for Religious and Spiritual Life and college chaplain. She served as the senior fellow for interfaith initiatives for three years, working with CRSL to promote its theme of justice, identity and social change, collaborating with others to undergird and rejuvenate social justice work with contemplative and reflective practices. She works closely with various religious and nonreligious student organizations on campus, faculty, staff, and community partners; and especially enjoys both her collective and one-on-one conversations with students. Matilda holds a bachelor's degree in religious studies from Lewis and Clark College, a master's degree from Smith College School for Social Work, and a master of divinity from Yale Divinity School.
L'Tanya Richmond, the dean of multicultural affairs, is devoted to programs and policies that maximize student opportunities for personal development and academic excellence. Responsible for the strategic leadership, vision and management of multicultural affairs, Richmond endeavors to implement and manage the diversity goals of the college, especially as they relate to the co-curricular education of undergraduate students of color. A passionate educator, mentor and champion of student retention and success, Richmond brings over two decades of experience in higher education. During her tenure at Elon University, the institution was named in the Kaplan Daystar as one of the top 100 schools in the nation for African Americans and was recognized by the Education Trust for graduation rates that are among the best in the nation for African American students. Richmond is a graduate of Duke University and Elon University.
Whitley Hadley, the assistant director of multicultural affairs, finds joy in cultivating inclusive, affirming, fun, and intellectually enriching spaces with students. She comes to Smith with a background in student affairs, with specific experience in cultural identity and leadership development. Whitley oversees the Mwangi Cultural Center, advises the Unity Presidents' Council, and invests in collaborative diversity programs and initiatives. She is invested in personal connection, and welcomes students on a walk-in basis and daily by appointment. Whitley's office hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Mwangi Cultural Center.

Actions or words used in the context of the academic curriculum and teaching environments that serve legitimate and reasonable educational purposes will not be evaluated as violating policies that bar certain behaviors, sexual harassment or unlawful discrimination.
In a diverse community, disagreements and conflicts, with varying degrees of seriousness, are inevitable. The college strongly encourages informal resolution of disputes and conflicts. Many issues are best resolved by direct communication between the individuals involved, sometimes with the help of a third party. Community members are expected to engage in good faith attempts to mediate their differences. To that end, all members of the Smith community are encouraged to use the deans, academic department chairs, supervisors and the staff members listed on this site to discuss concerns and seek resolution to differences.
