Nutrition at Smith

Two students in Cutter-Ziskind dining room

Smith Dining is committed to providing a safe and nutritious dining experience for our customers. Our goal is to create healthy menus and provide the tools, information, and support needed to navigate dietary needs in our dining areas. In line with that goal, Smith College Dining emphasizes food allergy awareness as well as options for dietary and religious preferences.

Food Allergies

Dining away from home can be stressful for individuals with food allergies. Through resources for students, staff training and menu transparency, Smith College Dining emphasizes support for those with dietary needs.

Prior to visiting our dining locations, students are encouraged to review the Food Allergy Action Plan. There you will find information about managing food allergies on campus, allergen labeling and more.

Ingredient and allergen information can be found on the NetNutrition page and can be a useful tool to help manage food allergies or dietary needs.

Dining Accommodations

Some students with food allergies, Celiac Disease or other medical conditions that may impact dining on campus may require further support. Smith Dining works closely with the Office of Disability Services (ODS) in this process. To request accommodations, please follow these steps;

Step 1:
Navigate to the ODS webpage to learn more about how to submit the Disability Identification Request form. Pertinent medical documentation is required. If you are unsure whether or not your condition is a disability, you can set up a time to meet with ODS staff.

Step 2:
Qualified students with a documented disability may be eligible for dietary accommodations. If approved by ODS, the student will be referred to the Smith College Dining Services dietitian to receive reasonable accommodations. It is the responsibility of the student to contact and meet with the dietitian after approval.

If you have a food allergy, intolerance or other dietary need and are seeking information outside of an ODS accommodation you may contact the Manager of Nutrition Services at dietitian@smith.edu for a consultation.

Dietary Lifestyle

Vegan and Vegetarian

Vegan and vegetarian options are available across all dining locations and highlighted on the plant-based menu served at Gillett House. All meals periods at dining locations include either a vegetarian or vegan entree option.

Vegetarian items follow most closely with the lacto-ovo vegetarian framework, meaning items exclude meat, poultry or fish but include milk, eggs and other animal by-products such as honey.

Vegan items contain no animal or animal by-products such as honey. We identify that some manufacturing practices can impact whether a food is considered vegan, such as sugar, and will only label an item vegan if it contains organic sugar.
