The Humanities at Smith

The study of the humanities reveals to us the amazing variety of the human experience throughout the world and throughout history. It also teaches us to appreciate the many ways in which that experience has found expression in the myriad creations of human mind and muscle, as well as in both the lasting values and the changing aims of human endeavor in the 21st century. The core of a liberal arts education is in the humanities, which at Smith are represented by more than 400 courses, from traditional studies of the Greek classics to inquiries into contemporary areas such as film studies, urban studies and third world development. Languages are an important part of the humanities, and the college offers more than 150 courses in foreign languages and civilizations.
