Julia Kopp ’25

Hometown: Syosset, NY

If you had to write a definition for the word “Smithie,” what would it be?
I think a Smithie is strong and intelligent and brave, but more than anything else I think a Smithie is incredibly kind.

What subject area are you most looking forward to exploring in more depth?
Ironically, I’m mostly looking forward to studying things outside my major—calculus, classics, and computer science are a couple of areas I’d like to explore. I think college is all about stepping outside of your comfort zone, and I’m so excited to do that.

What excites you most about living in one of the Smith houses?
House traditions are really exciting to me. I think it’s so cool to be a part of such a close-knit community and to participate in the traditions that make it unique.

Describe an experience in your life that changed your perspective.
Since I’ve been on a gap year, this year has had a challenge I haven’t had in a really long time in that I had so much free time I hardly knew what to do with myself. I’ve been working on reconnecting with the interests and passions I haven’t had time to foster in the past.

If you could be in the Guinness book of world records, what record-breaking feat would you attempt?
I would want to build the world’s tallest sandcastle. I feel like that would be something that would be a lot of fun to attempt.
