News of Dwight Hamilton

May 25, 2017

Dear Students, Staff and Faculty:

I am writing with news about an important member of our community. Dwight Hamilton, who has served as our vice president for inclusion, diversity and equity since 2015, has been appointed associate vice president for equity at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. He will begin his new role on July 1. This is a wonderful opportunity for Dwight. It is also a great opportunity for his family to return to the Midwest where they have extended family.

At the same time, this is a great loss for Smith and for me personally. Like so many of you who have worked with Dwight or benefited from his presence, I will miss his leadership, his wise counsel and his unwavering commitment to making Smith College a just and inclusive community.

Soon, I will begin the process of appointing interim leadership and searching for Dwight’s successor. In the meantime, please join me in wishing Dwight and his family all the best. I hope to see you at our farewell reception, to be held 4:30–6 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, at the Conference Center.

Sincerely,

Kathleen McCartney
President
