Yujie Pu

Yujie Pu specializes in the intertwined histories of medicine, law, and madness in late imperial and modern China, with particular interests in forensic medicine and the history of the body. Pu is currently developing a book manuscript, Legal Justice, Medical Authority, and Madness in China, 1600–1930, which examines how medical knowledge became actionable in Chinese judicial practice from the late imperial to the modern period. Her broader research agenda encompasses comparative Eurasian histories of law and medicine, the history of psychiatry, religion and medicine, as well as the study of Manchu-language sources. Her work has appeared in the Journal of Medical Humanities and has been supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation.

Her course offerings include Poison or Wonder Drug: A History of Medicine in China, and Mind, Body, and Medicine in East Asia.
