Biography
Tara Murphy teaches West African Dance at Smith College. She began exploring her heritage through African studies at Yale University, where she received her B.A. She was awarded a Yale fellowship to study traditional African dance and drumming at the University of Legon, Ghana. For the past twenty-five years, she has studied with many African and Afro-Caribbean artists in Boston, New York City and Washington, D.C. She is the founder and director of the professional ensemble Ammaya Dance & Drum, which has performed African-rooted music and dance at venues across New England. The ensemble gives dance and drum workshops for children, adults, seniors and people with disabilities.
