Keetje Kuipers’ poems have been praised by U.S. Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith as “daring, formally beautiful, and driven by rich imagery and startling ideas.” Kuipers’ fourth collection of poetry, Lonely Women Make Good Lovers (BOA Editions, 2025), won the Isabella Gardner Award, received a starred review from Publishers Weekly, and was recommended by Ron Charles for the Washington Post Book Club. Kuipers’ poems have appeared widely, including publications in The New York Times Magazine, American Poetry Review, POETRY, The Yale Review, and as part of the Academy of American Poets’ Poem-a-Day series.
Kuipers has been a Stegner Fellow, and an NEA Literature Fellow in Creative Writing, and she currently teaches at festivals and conferences around the world, including at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown and the dual-language writers’ conference Under the Volcano in Tepoztlán, Mexico. Kuipers is editor of Poetry Northwest, and co-curates the Headwaters Reading Series for Health and Well-Being, which utilizes poetry to illuminate vital issues of health for marginalized individuals. She lives with her wife and children in Montana as an uninvited guest on land that is the longtime home of the Salish and Kalispel peoples.
