Biography

Gunjan Sharma has 20 years of teaching experience at various institutions such as the University of Missouri and Sacred Heart University. Prior to moving to the Northeast, she worked at World Bank as a private sector development specialist/economist. She has taught at Smith College since 2021. Sharma’s research interests lie in the empirical aspects of international trade and economic development. Her research has used novel microeconomic data and advanced econometric techniques to analyze the growth experience of the Indian private sector firms (in terms of productivity, wages, employment generation, skill upgrading, as well as choice of location) in the wake of economic deregulation that occurred in the 1980s and 1990s. More recently, she is using machine learning approaches to understand the relationship between alcohol consumption and violence against women. Her work has been published in journals such as the American Economic Review and the Journal of Development Economics.
