A Message From the Dean for International Study

News of Note

Published March 17, 2011

To the Smith community:

I am writing to inform you that, in the wake of the catastrophic events in Japan, we have been in contact with our six students and the Smith faculty director of the Kyoto Program, as well as our two student enrolled in the Tokyo program. All report that they have not been directly affected by the disasters, although we are awaiting word on a possible relocation of the Tokyo program. Additionally, the college is working to assist the needs of our Japanese students as they contact family and friends at home.

The Alumnae Association has developed a message board for alumnae in Japan to check in and share their stories. Anyone wanting to reach out to the Smith College Club of Japan can send an email message.

We are all saddened by the devastating earthquake and tsunami and have expressed our sympathies and concerns to our Japanese colleagues and hosts. We extend our best wishes to them as they struggle through the disaster in the coming weeks and months.

We will continue to update the Smith community as news becomes available.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Hovey
Dean for International Study
