In fall of 2017, Smith joined JED Campus, a nationwide initiative of The Jed Foundation (JED) designed to guide schools through a collaborative process of comprehensive systems, program and policy development with customized support to build upon existing student mental health, substance abuse and suicide prevention efforts.

Smith College established an interdisciplinary, campuswide team that includes senior leadership to assess, support and implement improvements with assistance from the JED Campus team. After conducting an in-depth, confidential assessment to evaluate our current mental health promotion, substance abuse and suicide prevention efforts, JED’s clinical team is providing comprehensive feedback identifying successes and opportunities for enhancement.

A JED expert has visited the Smith campus for an onsite meeting to develop a strategic plan tailored to the school’s individual needs that will serve as a roadmap to implement enhancements over the course of the program. Throughout the process, Smith will collaborate with a dedicated JED Campus adviser who will provide ongoing support and resources. In addition, Smith College will have the opportunity to engage with the JED Campus Learning Community—a network of JED Campus schools—to share information on specific topics of interest that emerge from the community’s work with JED, as well as have access to an in-depth, online resource library.

In recognition of our efforts, Smith will receive the JED Campus membership seal to signify our commitment to student well-being. For more information, visit the JED Campus website.
