Seats in Sweeney Concert Hall

The dance, music and theatre departments are located in the Mendenhall Center for the Performing Arts at 122 Green Street. The Mendenhall Center is home to the department office; two fully equipped theatres; faculty offices; classrooms; lighting, sound and set design labs; lounges, rehearsal spaces and dressing rooms, and professional scene and costume shops. The Mendenhall Center is also home to the Josten Library for the Performing Arts, which contains an exceptional collection of over 108,000 volumes, 61,000 sound recordings, 3300 video recordings and more than 260 current periodical titles.

Theatre 14

Theatre 14, Smith’s main stage, is a proscenium theatre with extensive fly and wing spaces. The 460-seat theatre was a gift in honor of the Class of 1914.

Hallie Flanagan Studio Theatre

A versatile black-box facility named for Hallie Flanagan Davis, director of theatre at Smith from 1942 to 1955 and famed for her innovations in dramatic production, gives performers freedom in set and production design.

Acting Studio 1

Many New Play Reading Series events are held in Acting Studio 1 in Mendenhall Center.

Sweeney Concert Hall

Sweeney Concert Hall in Sage Hall, 144 Green Street, is one of the most sought-after performance spaces on campus. The comfortable, spacious hall seats more than 600, and its broad stage can readily accommodate the needs of a diverse range of performances, from solo recitals to large choral and orchestral ensembles. Sweeney's excellent acoustics are suitable for both vocal and instrumental performances.

Earle Recital Hall

Earle Recital Hall, located on the first floor of Sage Hall, 144 Green Street, is ideally suited for smaller recitals where the performer prefers a closer interaction with the audience. The hall seats up to 120, and its stage can accommodate two grand pianos or small to medium ensembles.

Scott Dance Studio

A number of dance performances are held in Scott Dance Studio in Scott Gym, adjacent to Mendenhall Center.

Belmont Avenue Parking Lot 

The lot behind the Mendenhall Center and the Schacht Center, off Belmont Avenue, is open to the public on weekends and after 5 p.m. on weeknights.

Smith College Parking Garage

The parking garage at 54 West Street is open to the public on weekends and after 5 p.m. on weeknights. The garage is approximately a four-minute walk from the Mendenhall Center.

Dickinson Parking Lot

Dickinson parking lot is located directly across from 40 Green Street, and is open to the public on weekends and after 5 p.m. on weeknights.

Lower ITT Parking Lot

The lots on lower College Lane and West Street are open to the public on weekends and after 5 p.m. on weeknights.

Green Street Parking

Metered parking spots are available along Green Street. Parking is free on Sundays and after 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday.

Assistive listening devices are available at the box office for theatre and dance productions in Hallie Flanagan Studio Theatre and Theatre 14. For more information on disability accommodations, such as sign language interpreters or a large-print copy of the playbill, please contact the box office, at 413-585-3220 (voice, TTY, TDD) at least 10 days before the event. 

Accessible Parking

There are accessible parking spaces available in front of Sage Hall (see map) and in the parking lot on Belmont Avenue.

Wheelchair Accessibility

The Mendenhall Center for the Performing Arts can be accessed by the ramp on Green Street, or the ramp on the Belmont Avenue side of the building between the Schacht Center for Health and Wellness and the Mendenhall Center. 

Box Office

The elevator to the second floor box office can be accessed from either the Green Street or Belmont Avenue entrances.

From Green Street
Enter via the ramp and turn right. At the end of the hallway, turn left and then take another right towards the bright orange and red hallway with photos of past productions. Follow the hallway all the way down until you reach the purple carpet. Take the elevator to the Upper Level (UL), exit, turn left out of the elevator, and continue down the foyer. The box office will be on your right at the end of the hallway.

From Belmont Avenue
The elevator is located on the left when you enter the building, right after the entrance to the Josten Library. Take the elevator to the Upper Level (UL), exit, turn left out of the elevator, and continue down the foyer. The box office will be on your right at the end of the hallway.

Wheelchair-Accessible Seating

Theatre 14 includes several wheelchair-accessible seats in rows C and N.

Row C is on the lower level of the center. Seats with a higher number (C 16–24) are closer to the Belmont Ave side of the building. Seats with a lower number (C1–15) are closer to the Green Street side of the building. If you are coming from the elevator, follow the orange corridor all the way down and taking a right at the end. Go through the door at the end of the hallway and the entrance to the theatre will be on your right.

Row N is on the upper level of the center. Seats with a higher number are on the side of the theatre closest to the elevator, while seats with a lower number are on the side closest to the box office.

Wheelchair-Accessible Restrooms

There are wheelchair-accessible restrooms on the first level, in the orange hallway on the Belmont Avenue side of the building. If you are seated in Row N, these are accessible by the elevator.
