Museum of Art to Host Artist Whitfield Lovell

The Smith College Museum of Art announces the 8th Annual Miller Lecture in Art and Art History, a distinguished lectureship that was established in memory of alumna Dulcy Blume Miller ’46 to bring a leading artist or art historian to campus each year.

The lecture, on Thursday, March 31, at 7 p.m. in Weinstein Auditorium, will be given by internationally respected artist Whitfield Lovell, whose work is currently on view at the Museum in the exhibition More Than You Know.

Lovell is known for his striking combinations of drawings and found objects, which juxtapose meticulously-crafted images of anonymous African-Americans (drawn from antique photographs) with historically evocative objects.

Lovell’s poignant drawings engage with themes of memory, history, and ancestry by creating thought-provoking representations of African-Americans living after the Civil War and before the Civil Rights Movement. His works create a space in which viewers can imagine the unrecorded narratives of these individuals, forgotten by the selective memory of American history.
