Emmy Award Winner Laverne Cox Will Speak at Smith

Laverne Cox—the Emmy Award-winning actress, producer and activist, perhaps best known for her role as Sophia Burset in “Orange Is the New Black”—will speak at Smith College’s John M. Greene Hall at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 17.

This talk was originally planned for March 8, but had to be rescheduled due to unforeseen circumstances.

People who still have paper tickets for the March 8 event should keep their tickets as they will be honored at the April event. Smith students, Five College students, Smith alumnae and Smith faculty must bring a valid Smith or Five College ID to the door in order to be admitted to the event.

People who had EventBrite tickets for the March 8 event have already had their tickets refunded and will need to purchase another ticket in order to attend the event. 

Members of the general public who would like tickets and who hadn’t previously purchased them may purchase tickets for $25 each online. 

Smith students who did not previously have a ticket may pick one up in the Office of Student Engagement. 

Five College students, Smith graduate students, Smith faculty, staff and alumnae may also purchase tickets in the Smith College Office of Student Engagement, Room 106 of the Campus Center until 4 p.m. Friday, April 14.

About the Event

Cox’s visit to Smith is organized by the college’s Student Event Committee, and tickets are required. 

Cox will offer prepared remarks and then participate in a moderated question-and-answer session with Jennifer DeClue, assistant professor of the study of women and gender at Smith.

Drawing from her personal experience, Cox will explore how the intersections of race, class and gender uniquely affect the lives of trans women of color. Students may submit questions for the conversation using the Google form at http://bit.ly/2kLGeIi.  

About Laverne Cox

Laverne Cox is an Emmy Award-winning actress who plays the groundbreaking role of Sophia Burset in the Netflix original series Orange Is the New Black. 

In movies, Cox most recently played Deathy, a supporting role in the Lily Tomlin film Grandma from acclaimed writer and director Paul Weitz.

Cox’s work as an actress and advocate has earned her a spot on the cover of Time Magazine.
