Seunghyeon Kim ’26

Scholarship Recipient

Why Smith?
I noticed that people at Smith had a strong connection within the campus community and that students passionately pursued authentic learning. These two elements persuaded me to apply to Smith.

How did financial aid influence your college decision?
Before getting to know about Smith, my family and I were worried about U.S. college tuition, which is very expensive to international students. However, the financial aid package that Smith offered, including scholarship aid, addressed that concern. Smith gave me opportunities to gain my academic confidence and to face academic challenges without any limitations.

What are you studying?
I am studying sociological theories and data analysis in R, an open source statistical programming language. I am considering going to graduate school for public policy, and I want to combine sociological ideas with corresponding data for social justice.

Favorite things about Smith?
My favorite things are the small class size and the open curriculum. I can take diverse courses regardless of my majors, such as Italian language, drawing, and Korean movie classes. This experience has broadened my academic interests, providing me the chance to explore different fields.

Which faculty or staff member stands out for you?
Nancy Whittier, professor of sociology and my adviser, helped me a lot to adjust to Smith. Her advice on my work and personal thoughts led me to recognize the significance of my ideas, and she always encouraged me to do something new.

Who or what has had the most impact on your life?
My family. They have always supported what I wanted to do and what I planned for. I have been able to struggle through tough things, and thrive, with their support.

How did you feel when you got your financial aid letter?
I was so glad. When I got the financial aid package, I felt like I was welcomed by Smith!

What would you say to a financial aid donor?
Financial aid means so much to students, especially at women's colleges. It offers opportunities for students to confront significant challenges and to spread their wings.

What does being a Smithie mean to you?
Being a Smithie means supporting each other powerfully and thoughtfully. I have no fear of new challenges or new environments because I believe many people, including Smithies, will respect what I do.
