The Jandon Center engages faculty, students and community partners on social-change projects that tackle community-driven goals. Through experiential learning and scholarship, students build essential capacities in critical thinking while providing significant leadership on urgent, complex issues facing communities and society.

​​AmeriCorps VISTA Opportunity

AmeriCorps VISTA applications are currently being accepted for a STEM Outreach VISTA position at the Jandon Center beginning in August 2018. This position is co-administered by the Jandon Center and the Campus Compact of Southern New England. The main goal of the position is to implement and improve specific social and educational outcomes in public schools. See the STEM Outreach VISTA job description and application information.

Making a Difference in the Community

By the Numbers

200+ Smith students provide 10,000 hours of community service per year. 100+ students partner with 10 local agencies on volunteer projects. 200+ students support STEM teaching in K-12 schools, adult literacy programs and nonprofits. 45 students are placed in apprenticeships in 5 major cities and the Pioneer Valley.

Jandon Center Orientation

  • Wright Hall 013, 7–9 p.m.
  • The Jandon Center for Community Engagement creates and supports opportunities for students and faculty to engage in experiential learning and scholarship that connects their academic passions with the vibrant and diverse communities surrounding Smith College. This orientation is designed to provide volunteers in all of Jandon’s various programs the opportunity to learn more about our center and staff, and to explore best practices in community engagement. Orientation begins with an online module, followed by a 2.5-hour group basic training for volunteers as well as opportunities for ongoing professional development and deeper dives into our primary best practices for community based research. We’ll cover: Mentoring 101: Building Developmental Relationships; Asset-Based Approach to People and Communities; and Cultural Humility.

A Maker Place Called School: A Lecture by Larry Rosenstock
