Advancing Social Equity and Supporting Healthy Communities

The Jandon Center engages faculty, students and community partners on social-change projects that tackle community-driven goals. Through experiential learning and scholarship, students build essential capacities in critical thinking while providing significant leadership on urgent, complex issues facing communities and society.

AmeriCorps VISTA Opportunities

​​AmeriCorps VISTA applications are currently being accepted for a STEM Outreach VISTA position at the Jandon Center with a start date of August 1, 2017.

This AmeriCorps VISTA position is co-administered by the Jandon Center and the Campus Compact of Southern New England. The main goal of the position is to implement and improve specific social and educational outcomes in public schools. Applications are preferred by June 23, 2017, but they will be accepted until the position is filled. Candidates must apply to the Jandon Center and the Campus Compact of Southern New England.

Making a Difference in the Community

By the Numbers

200+ Smith students provide 10,000 hours of community service per year. 100+ students partner with 10 local agencies on volunteer projects. 200+ students support STEM teaching in K-12 schools, adult literacy programs and nonprofits. 45 students are placed in apprenticeships in 5 major cities and the Pioneer Valley.

  • Come learn about the Community Service Office (CSO), the Jandon Center for Community Engagement (JCCE), and community service opportunities. Meet students already involved! Join us for treats and prizes.


CSO Community Service Fair

  • Campus Center Carroll Room, 4-5:15 p.m.
  • Want to get involved in community service, but not sure how? Don’t miss out! Drop by to discover ways to get involved with urban agriculture, tutoring, food justice and more. Representatives from Community Service Office partner agencies are looking forward to sharing opportunities at their agencies with you.


Dig In and Volunteer with CSO at Gardening the Community

  • 8:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. (on site 9 a.m.-noon)
  • Come volunteer with the CSO for our first fall trip to Gardening the Community! GTC is an intersectional food justice organization based in Springfield. GTC focuses on youth development, community building, and growing good food. Transportation is provided. The gardening event will take place outdoors. Sunscreen and bug spray are provided. Please bring water and a snack if you need one. Email for more information.
