Biography
Douglas Lane Patey has been the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies and the Guggenheim Foundation.
A specialist in 18th-century British literature and thought, Patey has written or edited five books, as well as essays on Dryden, Pope, Swift, Johnson, Austen, Hegel and the origins of modern disciplinary distinctions between the arts and the sciences. He's at work on an edition of the travel book Ninety-Two Days, to appear in the forthcoming 42-volume Collected Works of Evelyn Waugh, to be published by Oxford University Press.
Patey was among the founders of Smith's programs in book studies, landscape studies, and history of science and technology. He serves as an adviser in linguistics.
