A Must Read for 2014

A new book, Mistakes I Made at Work: 25 Influential Women Reflect on What They Got Out of Getting It Wrong, by Jessica Bacal, director of the Wurtele Center for Work and Life, is collecting accolades in advance of its release in late April. Publishers Weekly named the book one of the Top 10 Business and Economics Books for spring 2014. And the business magazine Fast Company named the book one of 10 New Books You Need to Read This Year.

For Mistakes I Made at Work, Bacal interviewed 25 successful women—including Smith alumnae, author Ruth Ozeki ‘80, a Booker Prize nominee for her 2013 bestseller A Tale for the Time Being; Laurel Touby ‘85, founder of Mediabistro.com; and Luma Mufleh, founder of Fugees Family, which helps child survivors of wars around the world; among others—about their own workplace detours and what they have learned from their errors.

Bacal will lead a series of drop-in workshops, titled “An Introduction to Making Mistakes,” related to her book, with three upcoming sessions, on February 6, 13 and 20, each from 12:15 to 1 p.m. in Campus Center 204. The workshops will offer “three steps to messing up and moving on,” and advertise: “perfectionists welcome.”
