Audio Production

In today's digital age, the ability to record audio is easier than ever through apps hosted on multiple devices including computers, tablets and iPhones. Software programs like Audacity, GarageBand and Logic Pro allow the user to record, mix, master and output professional quality audio programming. 

Facilities and Equipment:
At Smith College, two acoustically treated recording booths in the Center for Media Production (CMP) feature professional quality RODE microphones with pop filters, ideal for voice-over recording. By accessing one of several software apps available in the audio recording booths, users can record, edit and mix for audio or video projects, and output in a variety of digital file formats (WAV, AIFF, MP3, AAC). 

For field audio recording, the CMP offers a plethora of microphone kits, audio accessories (headphones, cables, mic stands) and portable digital audio recording devices to capture pristine audio on location. 

What the Research Says:
Students who are 'given a voice' by leveraging digital media tools greatly increase their ability to interpret, critically challenge, communicate and retain key concepts within their disciplines. Audio components currently incorporated into coursework at Smith include audio books, narratives for documentaries, foreign language radio podcasts, and enhanced news feature podcasts.
