The Smith College Information Literacy & Technology Seminar will be held on Tuesday, March 1, from 4:00-5:30 PM in the Neilson Library Browsing Room. All Five College faculty and staff are invited to attend. The seminar’s purpose is to provide a forum for discussion about the ways in which new technology influences libraries and our students’ ability to find, evaluate, and use information.
The seminar will be divided into three segments. The first of these will be introduced by Bruce Sajdak, Information Literacy Coordinator, who will provide a brief overview of the state of Smith’s Information Literacy Program. This will be followed by keynote presentations from two library directors on the challenges posed by technology and how academic libraries are assisting students and faculty to cope with the resulting demands. Two perspectives will be provided by Bryn Geffert, Amherst College Librarian, and Christopher Loring, Smith College Director of Libraries.
The second segment will highlight two examples of new technology designed to improve access to information for students and faculty. Jennifer Hall-Witt, Lecturer in the Department of History, and Pamela Skinner, Reference/
Electronic Resources Librarian, will demonstrate the use of digital collections to access primary resources in history. Then David Podboy, Reference and Information Commons Librarian, will showcase one of a new generation of "discovery tools" - powerful search engines which offer focused, academic alternative to the conventional web search engine.
In the final segment, a panel of Information Technology Services and Smith College Libraries staff will host a discussion with the audience on creating assignments to use technology and foster student learning. The panel will be composed of staff from Information Technology Services and the Smith College Libraries: Thomas Laughner, Director of Educational Technology Services; Barbara Polowy, Head, Hillyer Art Library; Rocco Piccinino, Branch Services Director & Head, Young Science Library; and also Bruce Sajdak, Information Literacy Coordinator.
