Second Smith Alumna Reported
Killed in Haiti Earthquake
Smith College recently learned of the death of a second
alumna, Ericka Chambers Norman ’91, during the earthquake that devastated Haiti a
week ago today.
The United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti notes
that Norman was a board of inquiry officer. Norman reportedly was killed when the
U.N. building in Port-au-Prince, where she worked, collapsed during the earthquake
Jan. 12.
The college last week learned of the death
of Lisa Mbele-Mbong ’93, a human rights officer for the United Nations, who
reportedly also lost her life when the U.N. building collapsed.
At 4:50 p.m. today, the U.N. Headquarters in New York
City will hold a wreath-laying ceremony to honor the victims of the earthquake. Those
unable to attend are invited to participate in the experience through a webcast (www.un.org/webcast).
The Secretary-General will call for a minute of silence throughout the U.N. system
worldwide at 4:53 p.m. EST.
