−"death of his adoring mother when he was twelve, of his father when he was twenty-one and of his older brother when he was twenty-three were shocking catastrophes for him, and painfully affected his later relationships" (Lee 113)

CHILDHOOD TEMPERAMENT:
-bossed by the other children (Lee 112)
-lack of success at school (Lee 112); Leslie blamed it on fact that he had been very short and then shot up to over 6ft2in
-"unconfident schoolboy...so 'nervous' that Dr. Seton had to be consulted" (Lee 113)
