PROGRAM: AKP Associated Kyoto Program

Field of Study: Program emphasizes Japanese language, with its USA administrative office here at Smith College. Course work includes intensive Japanese instruction (taught at a variety of levels) as well as courses in Japanese history, culture, and literature, which are taught in English.  Also, check out the information on Bridging Scholarships for Study Abroad in Japan (a Smith student won one of these for 2002!), and Freeman Awards. NSEP Boren scholarships are also available for study in Japan (fifteen were awarded for study in Japan in 2001-2002 and twenty-eight were awarded for 2002-2003).

Sample courses: Each year there are 8 courses offered to AKP students and these vary. For SWG/WST there have been a few options. Some of the recent choices have been: Gender in Modern Changing Japan (1998-99); Women in Japanese Cinema and Literature (97-98); Japanese Women Writers (96-97).

PROGRAM: Program for Mexican Culture and Society in Puebla (PMCSP)
Host Institution: Benemerita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP)
Site: Puebla, Mexico
Dates/Duration: August 1- December 14 and January 1- June 15; one semester (fall or spring), or full year
Field of Study: Full range of courses available at BUAP; Students take one obligatory language class per semester and then can take anything at the university. 
Prerequisites: Five semesters of Spanish or equivalent

Sample courses: There are courses that focus a great deal of interest on women such as, Anthropology: “Grupos Domésticos,” “Sexualidades”, and on specific women writers in “Literaturas Hispánicas.” Each year there is a literature seminar on one important Mexican writer, and some of these are on women writers.  There is also a Centro de Estudios del Género (Center for Gender Studies) which is more of a research group/center than a department that offers regular courses.
Internship possibilities: Emerging internship program will focus on student interest, with many possibilities presenting themselves for SWG/WST majors.

PROGRAM: PRESHCO: Programa de Estudios Hispánicos Córdoba Consortium with Oberlin, Wheaton, Wellesley, Trinity, Wooster
