Smith Students Recognized for Voter Turnout in 2008

Smith College was recently named among the institutional winners of the 2008 Campus Votes Challenge, a nationwide competition to encourage voting among students during the last presidential election.

The competition, which was administered by the Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service at Tufts University, recognized Smith in the category of institutions enrolling between 2,000 and 5,000 students, along with Hamline University, St. Paul, Minn. Also recognized were Lesley University and Manchester College, both in the category of schools enrolling fewer than 2,000 students; and Clemson University, Kennesaw State University and Tufts University, which each enroll more than 5,000 students.

The seven winning schools demonstrated a voter turnout among students of more than 70 percent in the election—significantly higher than the 59.7 percent average among 18- to 24-year-old college students, according to the Tisch College Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE).

The Campus Votes Challenge drew participation from more than 40 undergraduate colleges and universities nationwide.
