That’s the promise and the theme of this year’s annual Rhythm Nations, a cultural celebration coordinated by the International Students Organization (ISO), featuring a smorgasbord of performances by students from abroad.

A program of dance, music and demonstrations from China, Lebanon, Burma, Japan, Nepal, Zimbabwe, Vietnam, Hungary, India, Tibet and other countries across the water will take place on Saturday, April 3, at 7 p.m. in John M. Greene Hall. Admission is free, and open to the public.

“Rhythm Nations is not only a celebration of world music and dance,” explains Panchali Ellepola ’10, president of ISO, “but a celebration of Smith’s diversity.”

More than 200 students from nearly 60 different countries make their temporary homes at Smith. Rhythm Nations provides an opportunity to sample the cultures of some of them.

“Smithies should share in this event,” says Ellepola, “because it gives us a chance to see such an eclectic collection of performances and allows us to appreciate world culture. Rhythm Nations is 90 minutes of non-stop stimulation of the senses—vibrant colors, infectious beats, unique choreography.”

Rhythm Nations always draws a good crowd, so arrive early—and prepare for a dazzling tour around the world in 80 (or so) minutes.
