Musical Mix in Store at Jazz, Wind Groups Concert

Dozens of Smith instrumentalists—and a few vocalists—will come together for an eclectic program on Wednesday, Nov. 18, when the Smith College Jazz Ensemble and Wind Ensemble perform a range of works.

The ensembles’ annual fall concert, at 7:30 p.m. in Sweeney Concert Hall, Sage, is free and open to the public.

Jazz Ensemble

Smith’s Jazz Ensemble, 10 years old this fall, is a group of about 30 musicians. Directed by Genevieve Rose, who also plays bass, the group performs classic standards from the Big Band Era, such as Blue Moon, Summertime, Georgia on My Mind and many others. The group performs at various college events throughout the year, including the annual Jazz Brunch during Family Weekend, “Jazz on the Lawn” each spring, as well as the spring Williams College Jazz Festival.

Rose, a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, has received numerous awards recognizing her work, including the National Foundation for Advancement of the Arts Honorable Mention Award and the UMass Citizen Scholar Award. She performs nationally with various ensembles performing music across an array of jazz genres, from swing to Dixieland.

Wind Ensemble

The Smith College Wind Ensemble specializes in both standard and offbeat fare, having performed pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach, but also the Beatles, Aaron Copland, and John Phillip Sousa.

Director Ellen Redman, a classically trained flutist with a passion for Celtic music, has performed as the piccolo player with the Springfield Symphony since 1985. She also performs on a freelance basis with the Boston Symphony and other ensembles. Redman has received several honors, including the New York Flute Club Young Artist Competition and the WFLN (Philadelphia) Young Artist Competition. At Smith, Redman is the founder and director of the Wailing Banshees, a group that specializes in Irish tunes.
