Visiting
Pianist, 'Young Artist on the Rise' to Perform
Classical
pianist Elizabeth Joy Roe, a Visiting Artist and Lecturer
at Smith this year, will perform a concert of classical works
covering several centuries and half a dozen European countries
on Saturday, March 27, at 8 p.m. in Sweeney Concert Hall,
Sage.
 Roe will perform the Chromatic
Fantasy and Fugue by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), Etude
Fantasy by John Corigliano (born 1938) La
Valse by Maurice
Ravel (1875-1937), Isoldens Liebestod by Franz Liszt (1811-1886)
(from Wagner’s
Tristan und Isolde), and Pictures
at an Exhibition by Modest
Mussorgsky (1839-1881).
The concert is free and open
to the public.
Hailed as "brilliant" by The
New York Times,
pianist Roe was featured as one of the classical music world’s “Six
on the Rise: Young Artists to Watch in 2008” by Symphony
Magazine.
The winner of the prestigious William Petschek Piano Debut
Recital Award, she has appeared as recitalist, orchestral
soloist, chamber musician, and duo pianist at major venues
worldwide, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy
Center, the Ravinia Festival (Chicago), the Seoul Arts Center
(Korea), Salle Cortot (Paris), Teatro Argentino (Buenos Aires),
the Banff Centre (Canada), the Portland International Piano
Festival, and the Gina Bachauer International Piano Festival.
She has performed with the Milwaukee, Corpus Christi, Indianapolis,
Delaware, Lubbock, Texas, and Ars Viva Symphony Orchestras;
the Chicago Philharmonic; the Milwaukee and Indianapolis
Chamber Orchestras; and the Juilliard Orchestra, among others.
After earning her bachelor’s
and master’s degrees from The Juilliard School, she was handpicked
to join The Academy, a Carnegie Hall fellowship program devoted
to performance, education, and advocacy. A Steinway Artist
and Soros Fellow, Roe’s multifaceted career includes NPR
broadcasts, YouTube music videos, premieres of new music,
and community engagement projects.
