Dance Concert a Night of Multiple Genres

This spring’s popular
Seniors Dance Concert will feature choreographic collages,
double dance fusion, and ephemeral tumbling. Performances
will take place April 2 through 4, at 8 p.m. in Hallie
Flanagan Studio Theatre, Mendenhall Center.
The program of original
choreography in genres of modern dance, tribal fusion,
and physical theater marks the culmination off dance studies
for senior dance majors and minors
Meleta Buckstaff, Lila Dodge, Cyndal Ellis, Katie Green,
Mayra Hernandez, Leia Mae Hickman, Elana Silverman and Christa
Whitney.
In “Like a Cloud to Carry You Through the World,” Meleta
Buckstaff captures the feel of the onward rushing of our
surroundings. Seven dancers swirl and crash around each other
relentlessly, evoking windswept leaves and tumbling boulders.
Cyndal Ellis unites modern dance and tribal fusion in a piece
that confronts the male gaze on the female body, while Natanya
Apfelbaum’s clowning duet challenges audiences to discover
what demons may lurk in the subconscious. Elana Silverman
presents a collage of contrasting movement and music styles,
and Christa Whitney’s simple, subtle phrases eternally
approach (but never reach!) the elusive space in the center
of the stage.
The program also includes
three works that explore personal growth through struggle
and overcoming. Leia Mae Hickman’s “Re-discovery” examines
what it means to be part of a community. Hiding behind masks
but revealing themselves through mirrors, the performers
show how we see ourselves in one another. “This Time,
Hold the Milk!” by Mayra Hernandez connects audience
to artist in a piece reflecting on the daily struggles we
all face and the joy we find in overcoming them. Katie Green’s “Chiaroscuro” illustrates
the light and the darkness of each person, exploring from
an inside and outside perspective what it sometimes takes
to get by. The piece investigates the dynamic between individual
and group through chaos and slow motion.
Tickets are $9, general public, $5 for students/seniors.
