Upcoming Lecture to Honor
Beloved Late Professor

Monday, April 20, the religion department will host a lecture, “The Bhakti
Movement: India’s National Religion in Text and Image,” by John Stratton
Hawley in honor of the late Dennis Hudson’s recently published work The
Body of God: An Emperor’s Palace for Krishna in Eighth-Century Kanchipuram.
The lecture, at 4:30 p.m. in Seelye 106, is free and
open to the public.
Dennis Hudson, who had served on the Smith faculty for
more than three decades, died in December 2006. Hudson was renowned as one of the
foremost scholars in the nation of the religions of India.
Hawley, chair of the religion department at Barnard
College and author of more than 15 books, was a close friend of Hudson’s. He
will discuss the visual practices of devotion, both in terms of ritual acts and sacred
architecture, and will use examples from Hudson’s book to illustrate his points.
Hawley will also speak of the example that The Body of God has set
for text-and-visual studies, and how this work has helped transform various academic
fields.
