Athlete of the Week
Michelle Mai
Swimming and Diving

First year Michelle Mai (Paris, France) competed in her first Smith meet this weekend in a resounding fashion. Competing against local valley rival Mt. Holyoke, Michelle won the 100 back (1:04.65), finished 2nd in the 100 free (58.23) and won the 200 IM (2:23.76). She also helped the 200 Medley Relay team take 3rd place.

Smith Basketball Falls to Westfield State
The Pioneers fell 70-56 this evening to non-conference opponent Westfield State. With the victory, the Owls improved to 2-0 while Smith dropped to 1-1 on the season.

Smith Swimming & Diving Defeats Elms in Home Opener
The Smith College swimming and diving team defeated Elms College 162-124 in a non-conference dual meet this evening in Northampton, MA. With the win, the Pioneers improve their dual meet record to 1-2 on the season.

Smith Basketball Defeats Albany College of Pharmacy in Tyler Tip-Off
The Pioneers opened their 2009 season with a 60-39 defeat of Albany College of Pharmacy in the Tyler Tip-Off game this afternoon in Ainsworth Gym. First years Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, NY) and Daron Dean (Brush Prairie, WA) each scored twelve points in their collegiate debuts to lead Smith.

Smith Squash Drops Close Match, 5-4, to Northeastern
The Huskies of Northeastern University swept the first five matches today to take a 5-4 victory back to Boston. With the loss, Smith fell to 1-1 on the season.

Swimming & Diving Drops Close Meet to Eastern Connecticut
The Pioneers dropped an exciting and close meet today at Eastern Connecticut State University, 136-126. Junior Lily Seidman (Westfield, IN) led Smith winning three events while first years Michelle Mai (Paris, France) and Emma Reim (Ledyard, CT) each won two events.

The Pioneers finished fourteenth out of forty-seven schools today at the NCAA New England Regional Cross-Country Championships held under rainy conditions at Twin Brook Recreation Center in Cumberland, Maine.

Volleyball Individuals Earn NEWMAC Honors
Senior Mikal Minarich (Hobart, IN) has earned New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Volleyball All Conference honors for the third consecutive year while Brianne Connizzo (Demarest, NJ) and Bethany Weiss (Windham, NH) were named to the NEWMAC Academic All Conference team.

Sophomore Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) was named to the New England Women's and Men's All Conference (NEWMAC) Field Hockey All Conference Team while Mary Kate Long (Harrisville, NH), Natalie Wickles (Hatfield, MA) and Margaret Winter (Purchase, NY) all received NEWMAC Academic All Conference recognition.
