Athlete of the Week

Etta Grover-Silva
Track & Field

Sophomore Etta Grover-Silva (Arcata, CA) placed sixth out of eighteen competitors in the pole vault and earned All American honors with a height of 3.72m/12' 2.5" at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. All American honors capped off an outstanding season for Etta as she placed second at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship with a vault of 3.25m; finished 5th at the New England III Championships (3.10m); third at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship (3.57m) and took the New England Championship title with a height of 3.75m/12'3.5". Her mark at the Open New England Championships of 3.75m set a new Smith record as she broke her own mark of 3.51m established last year.

NEWMAC Nominates Shanti Freitas for NCAA Woman of the Year
Shanti Freitas '08 (Evanston, IL) and Doria Holbrook of MIT have been nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year by the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC).

Coach Nielsen Resigns as Soccer Coach
Smith College is losing its head soccer coach Phil Nielsen, who compiled a 71-59-15 record in eight seasons. Phil leaves Smith at the end of June and has decided to pursue other opportunities.

Grover-Silva Sixth in the Country in Pole Vault
Sophomore Etta Grover-Silva (Arcata, CA) placed sixth in the pole vault (3.72m/12'2.5") and earned All American honors at the Division III NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The event was won by Holly Robbins of McMurray with a vault of 3.92m/12'10.25".

Track Athletes Compete at ECAC Championship
Four track and field athletes competed at the 2008 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at Springfield College and combined for 35th place out of 51 institutions.

Smith Crews Race at National Invitational Collegiate Regatta
The Smith crews raced in the 2008 National Invitational Collegiate Regatta held Saturday and Sunday at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester and finished in fifth place in the Women's Point Trophy with 43 points. Ithaca won the points trophy with 63 points, followed by Holy Cross (57), Williams and Trinity with 54.

Maxner Called Back 11th Place in the Nation
Sarah Maxner (Norwich, VT) was called back 11th in the walk, trot, canter class at the IHSA Nationals held in Los Angeles, California. She and seven others were honored for their extraordinary accomplishment of earning a trip to Nationals, having been Champion or Reserve Champion first in their Region and then in their Zone.
