USING TIME MACHINE

ITS recommends backing up all your documents, files, and settings on a regular basis. Time Machine as part of the Mac OS no longer allows network drives to be used as a backup source. You will need an external hard drive. The size of the drive depends on how much space is being used on the computer.

Note: You can checkout an external hard drive from Smith Media Studios located in Henshaw B or external hard drives can be purchased at the computer store.

Disk Space Used:

  1. Click on GO in the upper left hand corner of the screen.

  2. Click on Computer. Or Hold down the Command and Shift keys and hit the letter C.

  3. Right click on the Macintosh HD and select Get Info, or click on Macintosh HD and hold down the Command key and hit the letter I.

  4. Under General, you will see Used and in parentheses you will see the GB’s used.

Backing Up:

  1. Plug in the external drive.

  2. From the Apple menu select System Preferences and then Time Machine.

  3. Click Select Disk, select the external hard drive you would like to use, then click Use for Backup.

  4. The Backup process should begin automatically. Time Machine saves hourly backups for the past 24 hours, daily backups for the past month, and weekly backups for everything older than a month.
