Sixth
Annual Dulcy Miller Lecture
 Barry Bergdoll, the Philip
Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design at New
York’s Museum of Modern (MoMA), will
present “Fabricating the Bauhaus:
Historiography and Replicability,” as the sixth annual
Dulcy B. Miller Lecture in Art and Art History.
The event will be hosted by the Smith College Museum of
Art, on Thursday, November 20, at 7:30 p.m. in Weinstein
Auditorium, Wright Hall. A reception will be held in Wright
Hall immediately following the lecture, which is free and
open to all; no reservations are necessary.
Bergdoll is also professor
of modern architectural history at Columbia University.
His interests center on modern architectural history with
a particular emphasis on France and Germany since 1800.
Bergdoll has organized, curated, and consulted on many
landmark exhibitions of 19th- and 20th-century architecture,
including “Home Delivery: Fabricating the Modern Dwelling” at
MoMA (2008); “Mies in Berlin” at MoMA (2001),
with Terence Riley; and “Breuer in Minnesota” at
the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (2002). He is author or
editor of numerous publications, including Mies in Berlin,
winner of the 2002 Philip Johnson Award of the Society of
Architectural Historians and AICA Best Exhibition Award (2002);
and an edited volume, Fragments: Architecture and the
Unfinished (London, 2006). He served as President of
the Society of Architectural Historians from 2006 to 2008.
The Miller Lecture series
was established at the Smith College Museum of Art in memory
of Dulcy Blume Miller, class of 1946. The fund enables
the Museum to bring a leading artist or art historian to
campus each year to give a public lecture and to take part
in class sessions. This year’s lecture
is presented in conjunction with “Bauhaus Modern,” on
view at Smith College Museum of Art through December 7, 2008.
