MFA Dance Candidates Present a Complex Notion

The annual MFA Dance Concert at Smith College is always the highlight of the winter dance season. This year’s concert, titled “A Complex Notion,” features exciting new works by second-year Master of Fine Arts in Dance candidates Audra Carabetta, Jillian Grunnah and Lona Lee.

Performances will take place Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 12 through 14, at 8 p.m. in Theatre 14, Mendenhall Center.

Carabetta’s modern dance piece explores the physical and emotional effects of spaciousness and crowding on personal relationships. “The architectural landscape of space continues to shift as dancers move in and out of large movement patterns, intricate gestures, and intimate physical connections,” she says.

Lee’s work, titled Caterpillar (just discarded old-skin), is an autobiographical modern dance exploring the inherent ties, transitions, and symbols of a family rooted in dysfunction. She invites the audience to participate by reflecting on how their past has helped to shape their present.

In her work Social Studies, Grunnah explores the cynical side of campus relationships and communication through comedy and explosive dancing.

Purchasing tickets in advance is recommended. Tickets are $9 for the general public and $5 for students and seniors. Call the box office (413-585-ARTS) or view the performance calendar (www.smith.edu/smitharts) for more information about this and other performing arts events at Smith.
