Smith Takes Lung Association's Healthy Air Award

Smith College’s efforts to reduce its polluting emissions and help protect the environment have not escaped the notice of an organization with a direct stake in healthy air.

The American Lung Association (ALA) of Massachusetts has named Smith as the recipient of its first annual Healthy Air Award for the college’s multi-pronged approach to environmental responsibility. The award is given in recognition of research, education and advocacy efforts focused on protecting and enhancing indoor and outdoor air quality.

The ALA, which has offices in Springfield and Waltham, Mass., conducted a review of several educational institutions and businesses in the state, said Bianca Walker, development manager for ALA, “but it was Smith hands down for the award this year for its measures toward protecting the environment. We were very impressed with Smith’s Web site, its Green Team and the sustainability efforts taken on by staff, students and faculty there.”

When the award review committee decided on Smith for the Healthy Air Award, it wasn’t aware of the college’s co-gen power plant, which became active this year, said Walker. “We were even more impressed when we learned about that,” she said. “We’re very happy with our choice.”

The Healthy Air Award will be presented to Smith representatives on Saturday, March 28, during the ALA annual Breath of Life Ball, held at Chez Josef in Agawam, Mass.
