Smith Fulbrighter Wins Business Competition at MIT

In less than a minute on January 30, Lamya Al Abdulkarim, a Smith Fulbright scholar from Saudi Arabia, presented a business idea that clinched first place during an intense challenge at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The moment capped a weeklong entrepreneurship program that she attended with about 135 other participants through the Sloan Executive Education Program.

Al Abdulkarim won the “elevator pitch” contest by presenting an idea for cost-saving equipment during a mock meeting with a McDonald’s executive at a cocktail party. An elevator pitch is a sales pitch with the objective of convincing an investor to consider an idea for a new product, service or business within the brief duration of an elevator ride--less than 55 seconds in the MIT contest.

Think you could do it? Smith students interested in learning about an elevator pitch can do so at noon Thursday, Feb. 19, in Campus Center 102. The college's annual elevator pitch contest will be held March 5 and is sponsored by Smith's Women and Financial Independence (WFI) program and the Harold Grinspoon Entrepreneurship Initiatives.
