Campus Food Drive to Combat Local Hunger

Students, faculty, and staff at Smith are invited to donate food and/or funds to support The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts during the next two weeks and help feed more than 100,000 people in Hampshire, Hampden, Franklin, and Berkshire Counties.

From Monday, September 24, to Thursday, September 27, students are participating in a “Penny Wars” fund drive, collecting coins in the campus center as part of a competition to see which residential area on campus can raise the most pennies.  Points will be given based on the type of coins or paper money collected in each jar, and students can “sabotage” other residential areas’ jars to tilt the competition in their favor. One hundred percent of the money raised will benefit The Food Bank’s mission to reduce hunger and increase food security in western Massachusetts.

The following week, October 1-5, students, faculty and staff will hold a campus-wide food drive to help fight the solvable problem of hunger. Everyone on campus is encouraged to contribute non-perishable goods, such as peanut butter and jelly, spaghetti, canned soup, tuna, cereal, canned beans and rice to receptacles placed in the Campus Center office, in campus residences and other locations. All the items collected will be donated to The Food Bank. The food will then be distributed to Food Bank member agencies around the region.

The Food Bank provides food to more than 400 member agencies, including food pantries, meal sites and shelters, which in turn feed low-income families, children, elders, and adults who are hungry or at risk of hunger. About one in 10 people in western Massachusetts suffers from chronic hunger, and The Food Bank, through its member agencies, provides about 6 million pounds of food annually to those in need of food assistance. Smith College is working with The Food Bank to raise awareness on campus about hunger in our communities.
