Choral Groups Present Autumn Serenade

The annual Autumn Serenade on Saturday, Nov. 10, is a popular revue of several of Smith’s vocal groups. The concert will take place at 8 p.m. in Sweeney Concert Hall, Sage. The concert is free and open to the public.

The Smith College Glee Club, under the baton of Jonathan Hirsh and with piano accompaniment from Clifton J. Noble Jr., will present a program of works ranging from classic choral pieces to more contemporary numbers. The program includes, among many beautiful and soaring pieces, Three Love Lyrics by Ronald Perera, professor emeritus of music at Smith; Johannes Brahms’ magnificent Vier Gesange fur Frauenchor mit Begleitung von 2 Hornern und Harfe, Op. 17; and Cachucha and Finale from Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Gondoliers.

Also on the bill for the evening are the Smith College Chorus and Chamber Choir, both under the baton of Ryan Brandau. The chorus will present work from Brazilian composer Ernani Aguiar and Smith’s own Clifton J. Noble Jr. They will also perform Pablo Casals’s Nigra Sum, a favorite of women’s vocal ensembles. Brandau will also lead the Smith Chamber Choir in a selection of pieces by Edward Elgar and Bruce Shelley, which feature poetry set to music. Both the College Chorus and the Chamber Choir will present movements from the cycle Songs for Women’s Voices by New England composer Gwyneth Walker.

Groove, Smith’s newest a cappella group, features students from both the College Chorus and Glee Club. For Autumn Serenade, Groove will perform a rendition of Regina Spektor’s Fidelity, arranged by KT Herr ’07 and Elizabeth Mongrello ’09.
