Dance Concert Features Variety of Styles

This year’s annual Spring Dance Concert, under the
direction of guest artist-in-residence Donna Mejia, will
feature premieres of original works by five undergraduate
choreographers: Meleta Buckstaff ’09, Cyndal Ellis
AC, Katie Green ’09, Julia Hudson ’08, and Rita
Iyer ’10.
The concert will take place
Thursday through Saturday, April 3-5, at 8 p.m. in Hallie
Flanagan Studio, Mendenhall Center.
Also featured is a new modern work by Ariel Gonzalez Cohen,
MFA and lecturer in the Smith College Dance Department, and
a ballet ensemble piece by guest artist and Smith alumna
Megan Bonneau McCool. The program offers a diverse selection
of dance and music styles and genres, including modern, ballet,
tribal fusion, and Bharatanatyam, a traditional, 5,000 year-old
South Asian art form.

Megan Bonneau McCool
McCool performed professionally with the New York City Ballet
as an apprentice after studying as a scholarship student
at the Pennsylvania Ballet and the School of American Ballet.
She performed as a principal dancer in their workshop performances
and received the Mae L. Wein Award for Outstanding Promise.
An instructor and choreographer, McCool has worked with
ballet schools and dance departments in colleges in the
northeast and southeast, primarily in the Massachusetts,
Connecticut, and New York area. She served as Ballet Mistress
for Pioneer Valley Ballet during her college years. Her
choreography has been performed at RDA Festivals and at
the ACDFA’s National Festival at the Kennedy Center
in Washington, D.C, with collaborator Jennifer Kayle. She
is a recipient of the RDA/NE Emerging Choreographer’s
Award, a Monticello College Foundation Scholarship, and
was an Honoree of “The Choreography Connection.” She
holds an MFA in Dance/Choreography and an AB in American
Studies from Smith. She currently teaches at Walnut Hill
School of the Performing Arts in Connecticut and freelances
as a choreographer. |
