Today is Mountain Day

Smith students celebrate Mountain Day 1953 on the summit of Mount Holyoke (courtesy of College Archives; photo by D.I. Crossley ’50).

Mountain Day is celebrated at Smith on a beautiful fall day when the president cancels classes and encourages students to "take a day off." The tradition was first recorded in 1877 in the diary of a student who spent the day hiking with friends on Mount Nonotuck.

A picnic lunch can be provided by the college to be carried to the students' various outdoor activities on campus or to nearby parks. Classes and academic appointments scheduled before 7 p.m. are canceled. Evening classes, films, lectures and other events will be held as planned.

Many on campus have already firmed their plans.

Lamont House will pick apples at Quonquont Farm in Whately, and Lawrence House will pick at Outlook Farms in Westampton. The students will return to campus to spend the afternoon making apple crisp. Washburn has a tradition of eating bag lunches together on the boathouse dock and spending the afternoon together. The Ada Comstock Scholars are taking orders this week for apple-crisp kits as a fundraiser. And Staff Council will serve a delicious apple dessert á la mode on the College Hall lawn to passers-by.
