Smith, Local Schools Host Renowned Theater Group

Partners in Health, a collaboration between Smith College and the Northampton Public Schools to promote the health and wellness of Northampton’s youth, is bringing Nitestar Theatre to Northampton on March 4 and 5 for two days of workshops and performances at the Northampton High School and John F. Kennedy Middle School.

Nitestar is a nationally acclaimed New York City-based theater group that uses drama and peer education to bring lifesaving health information to youth. All music, shows, and dance are original. The company presents to youth, parents, and health care providers throughout New York City and nationwide. Founded in 1987 by Executive Director Cydelle Berlin, to date, Nitestar programs have reached over 1.5 million people.

Nitestar will offer an evening performance titled “Everybody’s Doing It!” for middle and high school parents, faculty, and staff on Tuesday, March 4, at 7 p.m. in the Northampton High School auditorium. This performance is open to all adults in the community and is free of charge. Parents attending will be eligible to win raffle prizes, including a $100 gift certificate to downtown Northampton. Attending teachers will be eligible for Professional Development Points. On Wednesday, March 5, the theater company will travel to JFK Middle School to give another performance and workshops for all 8th-graders. Topics to be discussed include drugs and alcohol, peer pressure, conflict and violence, self-esteem, decision-making, and accepting differences.

Partners in Health is an ongoing collaboration among health educators and counselors at JFK Middle school, Northampton High School, the Northampton Public Schools Department, and Smith College. Partners in Health is sponsored by a grant to Smith College from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, a medical research organization.
