Five Sophomores Named Mellon Mays Fellows

Five Smith sophomores were recently named Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellows. They are Nathalie Ais, Stacy Diaz, Justine Gonzalez, Jessica Reyes, and Maria-Fatima Santos.

The Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship program, which is funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, is designed to increase the number of under-represented minorities entering doctoral programs, in order to ultimately broaden the pool of faculty members at the nation’s educational institutions.

Smith also recently received a $1.4 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support an initiative that aims to provide greater direction for students navigating the college's open curriculum. Read the press release.

Each Mellon Mays Fellow will work with a faculty mentor on a research project of her design. Fellows are provided with summer and term time stipends, as well as support for travel and other research related expenses. They also receive support for applying to graduate programs and, if they enter a Ph.D. program in a Mellon-designated field, they will be eligible for a loan forgiveness and additional graduate level support.

The newest Smith Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellows join five juniors who received the fellowship last year: Donielle C. Hatcher, Wendy M. Roman, Maya L. Wei-Haas, Emily H. Yen, and Monica (Dayo) Harris AC.
