Senior Soccer Captain Wins NCAA Scholarship

Though Janine Olthuis ’08 is not yet sure which of five graduate schools she will attend, she knows she will have a good start paying for her next educational step.

Olthuis , who is president of the Student Athlete Advisory Council and a captain of the soccer team, is the recent recipient of the highly competitive postgraduate scholarship from the National Collegiate Athletic Assocation (NCAA).

The award is given annually to 87 women (and 87 men) in their final year of intercollegiate competition, who excel academically and athletically. The scholarship grants a one-time award of $7,500, to be applied to graduate degree course expenses.

"This award really is just an awesome way to end four great years of academics and athletics at Smith," said Olthuis. "Being a member of Smith soccer and Smith athletics has been such a huge and important part of who I have been while at Smith."

Olthuis plans to study clinical psychology. She has applied to schools in Canada and the U.S. "This scholarship will definitely help me financially through my first year of school and I am very thankful for that."

The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote postgraduate education for distinguished student-athletes. In selecting award recipients, the program considers involvement on campus and in the community, volunteer activities and leadership.
