Groundbreaking Ceremony to Mark Ford Hall Milestone

As the foundation for Ford Hall begins to take shape, the campus community is invited to a groundbreaking ceremony at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, on Belmont Avenue next to the construction site.

Ford Hall is named in honor of the lead donor to the project, the Ford Motor Company Fund. Through its Advanced Education Program, the fund supports programs that emphasize diversity in engineering and link classroom learning with real-world projects and issues.

Designed by the architecture firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, the building emphasizes sustainability and energy efficiency and will serve as a teaching tool for sustainable design. Both a structure and a symbol, it will be a compelling, visible statement of Smith’s public identity as the women’s college with the strongest programs in science and engineering.

Site preparation for construction of the facility began in spring 2007 under the management of William A. Berry & Son. When completed in 2009, the building will be home to the Picker Engineering Program, computer science, chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology.
