Smith on the Walls of New Hospital Wing

If you happen to find yourself at Cooley Dickinson Hospital on Elm Street in Northampton, you may recognize the scenery. On the walls of a third-floor waiting room hang framed photographs of scenes from Smith College.

The waiting room is a handsomely designed, spacious corner on the third floor of the hospital’s new surgery and patient wing. The walls there feature some of the more familiar scenes from campus: the Grécourt Gates, the Campus Center, the Lanning Fountain, Botanic Garden, Paradise Pond, students at commencement exercises and in downtown Northampton.

The waiting room was adorned with photographs of Smith after the college donated $150,000 to the hospital’s Caring for the Future campaign last year. Following that donation, explained Diane Dukette, vice president of development for the hospital, the hospital offered an opportunity to name a space in the new facility.

“Smith College and Cooley Dickinson Hospital enjoy a strong relationship and it is our honor to have photos of the college so prominently displayed in the building,” said Dukette.

The hospital raised more than $12 million during the Caring for the Future campaign. The cornerstone of the campaign was the construction of the hospital’s new 100,000-square-foot surgery and patient addition, with eight new surgery suites, a new laboratory, and nearly 100 single patient rooms.
