Flags
Around the ITT
 You could call
it the United Nations of Smith College — 96
flags representing countries around the world, adorning 30
panels on the walls of the Indoor Track and Tennis facility.
The flags represent
all the home countries of students who have attended Smith
in the past 23 years.
A flag collection
was originally displayed several years ago, but over time
had thinned out to only 53 flags as some had become worn
and were not replaced, and as students from countries not
before represented came to Smith. Since then as the college’s
world representation has expanded, 43 new flags, from countries
such as Bulgaria, Vietnam, Sweden and Tibet, have been
added.
The updating
project was assigned to Erin McDade ’08
and Christina Noh ’09, both student interns in the
Events Management Office. After researching student records
in admission and the College Archives, the students determined
the countries represented at Smith and ordered the flags.
 “A representative of Sentry Uniform & Equipment
Co. in Chicopee visited the ITT early in the project to help
identify existing and outdated flags,” said Peg Pitzer,
director of events management, who oversaw the project. “He
provided us with images of all current United Nations flags.
We ordered the new flags from that company.”
Physical Plant personnel
then hung the flags in alphabetical order on all four walls
of the facility. Spaces remain for more flags as new countries
are represented at Smith. |
